Our
Story

#3 - JC's draft.png

Did you say NextUp or NetUp?

"互" is the chinese character for "mutual", "interaction" or "each other". This is our intention and our North Star.   It emphasizes of the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in our mission.

The name "NetUp: (country)" was chosen to reflect our ambition to help startups navigate in different Asian countries.

We have been running this competition since 2017 under different partners' brand names with success.  This year, we thought, why not learn from the entrepreneur spirit and build our own?

Hello

I'm Jamie Soon.  I'm the founder of NetUp.

I am passionate about deep tech innovation and I was curious about all the developments around the #tech4good startup scene, in particular in France.  As I peel open the layers, I realised that the deep tech startup scene, in particular, is a hotspot for talented, mid-career women who are tired of the multiple glass ceilings in bigger companies.  They leave their stable jobs to venture into entrepreneurship where they could use their talents and experience in a setting where they can be their authentic self.

Even though women (co-)founded startups have consistently shown to fetch higher returns on every dollar invested than all-male-founded startups, they are not receiving the investment dollars they deserve.   This is why I founded the NetUp challenge in 2017 with my time after work, to help women (co-)founders improve their visibility and help them expand their businesses to Asia, using Singapore - my natal country - as a launchpad.  I am blessed to be surrounded by like-minded volunteers, who too see the value of volunteering their time after work to make this happen.

Women CEOs are more likely to hire and nurture other young, talented women.  I believe that in doing so, we are planting a seed to introduce more women in STEM careers in the long run.

Soon, I realised that it is not just a problem of gender diversity.  The problem pertains also broadly to diversity, equity and inclusion, for example minorities, people from under-privileged backgrounds.  This is why today, we opened up the competition to any person actively supporting greater gender, social and ethnic diversity in science and tech.
